Well, I'm not sure what to make of Doppler radar after last night. We went to the basement, according to the radar a purple blob (which apparently is like death storm 2000) was about to pass right over us.

So we're down there, and yeah, there was some rain, and yeah there was a lot of lightning, but no extraordinary wind, no hail, and after about 10 minutes things died down, yet according to the radar we were still about to get pummeled.

I mean, I know Derek said it would be like this, but quite honestly, it was more that than this...

New storm hits with little warning

A fresh round of thunderstorms socked the region this morning, downing tree limbs and power lines, sparking fires and causing traffic problems and possible flooding.

That warning was canceled by 8:10 a.m. but then flood advisory was issued for Hamilton, Clermont, Warren and Clinton counties until 10:15 a.m.

That joins a tornado watch that remains in effect until 11 a.m. because conditions that could form one -- moisture, heat and wind -- linger in the area, said meteorologist Andy Hatzos.

Temperatures remain warm this morning at 77 degrees at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Today?s high temperature is expected to reach 85 degrees, and showers and thunderstorms are expected.

Some could be strong at times, Hatzos warned.

?We are far from being done,? he said. ?We are still monitoring very large areas of thunderstorms that we need to keep an eye on for potential severe weather.?

Such a weather system is rare for this part of the country, he said. Storms such as Tuesday?s are more common in areas such as Oklahoma, where moisture, heat and wind more commonly come together.

In Newtown, police are investigating after residents reported a possible tornado spotted on Ohio 32, the main drag through town. Trees are down in that area but a tornado has not been confirmed, a dispatcher said. Police have reported four to five trees down in Mound View Park on Church Street

In Warren County, Lebanon fire crews are searching for a child that possibly could be in a creek at Sycamore and Silver streets.

The express lane on eastbound I-275 at Ohio 4 in Springdale is closed for the day due to high water, ARTIMIS reports.

High water was reported on northbound Interstate 75 north of I-74, according to ARTIMIS. No accidents or injuries have been reported but some vehicles have stalled out, said Chris Eveslage, a traffic operator. The highway remains open but motorists are urged to use caution.

Elsewhere, at least seven other accidents have been reported on highways this morning. No major injuries or problems have been reported but traffic is slow on both south and northbound I-75 near downtown Cincinnati, he said.

Trees and wires are down across Hamilton County and Cincinnati. The storm knocked down wires in Hyde Park on streets such as Observatory and Paxton avenues and Madison and Stettinus roads. Several streets are closed due to downed trees including Delta and Observatory.


About 8 a.m., winds tore off a large portion of the roof off the dealership portion of Woody Sander Ford, 235 W. Mitchell Ave., in Spring Grove Village.

No injuries were reported but the building is visibly heavily damaged.

Some cars and trucks on the dealership lot also sustained minor damages.

"We got off real lucky there," said Kyle Sanders, a salesman.

Other employees were seen going inside the dealership to recover computers and file cabinets.

Cincinnati code officials are en route to the scene to inspect the building, said Ed Cuningham, supervisor of Cincinnati's building inspections department.

Duke Energy crews have been called to numerous locations.

A tree was reported down into a house in the 1500 block of Glen Parker Avenue in Northside. Electrical wires also are down. It is not known if they are live or if anyone was injured.

A transformer in the 1500 block of Central Avenue was struck by lighting and burst into flames.

This latest batch of storms follows waves of severe thunderstorms that ripped through Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, with the worst of the storms hitting Butler and Warren counties.

Tuesday night, several funnel clouds were reported, mostly in Oxford and Mason, but no tornadoes have been confirmed touching down, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington and county dispatchers. Tornado sirens shrieked in communities such as West Chester Township about 9:30 p.m. as some residents took shelter in their basements.

A Waynesville woman was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after lightning struck her one-story house in the 900 block of Windfield Way at 8:19 p.m. Tuesday, said Wayne Township Fire Chief Paul Scherer.

The woman, who was standing in her bedroom at the time, suffered pain throughout her body from the strike, he said. She does not have life-threatening injuries. Her name and age was not released. Other relatives were home at the time, but they were not injured, the fire chief said.

Claire Wagner, a spokeswoman for Miami University in Oxford, said several hundred people attending a graduation for Hamilton High School about 9 p.m. Tuesday were held in Millett Hall due to the severe weather.

Incoming Miami freshmen and their parents going through orientation also were held in basements of other buildings for safety.

?For the intensity of the storm, there seems to not be any damage right now,? said Chris Warren, an Oxford police dispatcher.

Cincinnati saw 1.64 inches of rain Tuesday, setting a record for rainfall on that date, Hatzos said. The previous record was 1.39 inches in 1941.

Areas north of the city in Butler and Warren counties saw 2-3 inches of rain, he said.

Another inch or two could fall today across the region.

A flood warning is in effect until tonight for the Little Miami River at Kings Mills, where the river is expected to rise to 18 feet, a foot over flood stage at 17 feet. It was at 11.5 feet as of 7 a.m.

Power outages were widespread Tuesday and so far today, throwing more than 37,000 people into the dark, according to Duke Energy?s website.

As of 9:20 a.m., 8,702 people remain without power, mostly in Hamilton County.
